Tolo Salleras. The Legacy of a 20th-Century Photojournalist

The Sound and Image Archive of the Council of Mallorca (ASIM) and the University of the Balearic Islands present the exhibition entitled Tolo Salleras. The Legacy of a 20th-Century Photojournalist, curated by Maria Josep Mulet and Joan Carles Oliver and coordinated by Francesc X. Bonnín.

 

The exhibition highlights the photographer's artistic talent and the value of the local photographic heritage. The heirs of photographer Bartomeu Salleras (Porreres, 1938 – Palma, 2005) donated his image collection, consisting of hundreds of black and white and color negatives, to the University. The University hosted the archive with the commitment to preserve, catalog, and disseminate it. The family donated  it to preserve their father's visual memory and, thus, the memory of the sociopolitical context of Mallorca in the second half of the 20th century. From 1977 to 2002, Tolo Salleras was the official photographer for all the autonomous and pre-autonomous governments of the Balearic Islands.

 

Like many local photography professionals, he trained in local establishments (such as Casa Planas) until he set up his own studio, where he received all kinds of commissions (portraits, social rituals, advertising, shows, events, competitions, etc.). He also worked as a photojournalist for the newspaper “Última Hora” (1959-1965), covering a wide range of news and producing reports on every day, special, or extraordinary events, with an industrial, musical, tourist, sports, and cultural focus: capturing the moment on camera.
